Hello there. I am currently caretaker to my husband who has stage 4 colon cancer. I also care for my 89 year molbilty challenged mom who I moved in with us 3 years ago. Yesterday I had to take her to the ER as the home health nurse thought she had a fistula. Turned out just a umbilical hernia, however the ct scan revealed a Complex 8.0 x 5.0 cm adnexal mass with solid componet measuring approx 5.9 x 3.1 cm, raising the question of neoplasm. To get her to even go to the ER was like pulling teeth. They wanted to admit her to oncology but she refused. I completley understand and respect her decssion of not wanting treatment she is 89 afterall. The only issue I have is that we need to know for cetain that this is ovairian cancer and to stage it so hospice can eventually come in and help. I am going to make an appointment for her to the oncologist and hopefully get her to go. What further tests do you think she will need. I know an ultrasound but would it be transvaginal? She would never consent to that. Also I know a CA125 should be run right? Also, Is a biopsy really needed to determine maligancy if the CA 125 is positive? How is that performed? She is old fashioned and beleive me there will be no way in Gods green earth would she have a pelvic exam. This is a nightmare, I have only 3 living adult relatives, my uncle has liver cancer, my husband colon, now probabally my mom too. My kids asked me this morning, "Mom why does everyone have cancer" for the first time I answered I just don't know the answer. Thanks all for your help.
